From Redundant Farm Cottage to Stylish Country Home
Back in early 2024, we were approached by a client in Ulverston with a unique challenge – to breathe new life into a long-forgotten farm cottage tucked away on the edge of the countryside. The property had been sitting vacant for years, its layout dated and its condition far from habitable. The client’s dream was to turn it into a stylish, welcoming family home that respected its rural charm while offering all the benefits of modern living.
A Modern Home with Rustic Character
The brief was clear: they wanted a home that felt bright, open and warm, yet retained a strong connection to its heritage. After our initial consultation, we recommended a full renovation that would completely reimagine the interior layout, improve the building’s efficiency, and allow natural light to flood in—all while preserving the character of the original structure.
The result is a seamless blend of traditional features and contemporary design. The cottage now feels spacious, functional, and filled with personality.
A Thoughtfully Designed Living Space
Over five months, our team managed every stage of the renovation—from initial strip-out to the final coat of paint. Major structural changes included removing load-bearing walls and installing steel beams to open up the interior, allowing for a more modern, free-flowing layout. A bespoke solid oak staircase now acts as the heart of the home, adding both warmth and craftsmanship.
Upgrades like a brand new insulated roof, energy-efficient windows and doors, and a complete rewire have future-proofed the property. The installation of a new central heating system and modern plumbing ensures the cottage is as comfortable and practical as it is beautiful.
Light, Warmth & Comfort – All Year Round
We paid close attention to creating a cozy yet light-filled atmosphere. Timeless finishes, fresh tones, and quality materials give every room a welcoming feel. Underfloor insulation and energy upgrades mean the home is warm in winter and cool in summer—perfect for country living.
Outside, we finished the project with dry stone walling, slate chippings, and sandstone paving, creating a low-maintenance yet charming garden area. A new timber gate adds privacy and secure access, completing the transformation.
